Insights and Inspiration from Over Three Decades of Experience Coaching Coaches and Cheerleaders

When I scan the sidelines, my perspective is shaped by over 35 years spent teaching, coaching, mentoring, and championing both cheerleaders, instructors and fellow coaches. I see more than a group of individuals eager to learn; I see a dynamic, evolving community—each person a thread in the vibrant tapestry of cheerleading. Whether new to the role or seasoned on the sidelines, every coach faces the same essential challenge: cultivating a culture where athletes can grow, teams can thrive, and everyone feels empowered.

After guiding countless squads and mentoring coaches across generations, I know firsthand that the strongest teams are built step by step, from the ground up. The early days of the season—those tentative, hopeful practices—are critical. This is when foundations are forged: warm-ups transform into rituals, technical drills become habits, and the seeds of trust are sown. Never underestimate the value of returning to fundamentals, no matter what level your team is at. Muscle memory fades; confidence wavers; but with a thoughtful approach, every athlete can reclaim their skills—and every coach can reclaim their spark.

My philosophy is rooted in observation and adaptation. Early assessments of your team’s strengths and areas for growth inform every lineup and formation decision. Setting clear, collective goals with your athletes isn’t just motivational—it’s transformational. Celebrate the milestones, revisit the ambitions, and let each challenge become a shared stepping stone.

But beyond drills and routines, there’s a deeper truth: the best teams flourish in a supportive, inclusive environment. Open communication, regular check-ins, and authentic dialogue keep everyone aligned. When athletes feel heard and valued, their commitment deepens, and the entire program benefits.

After more than three decades, I’m convinced that coaching is as much about nurturing people as it is about teaching skills. The journey is filled with both triumphs and trials, but every lesson—success or setback—contributes to the legacy you leave behind.
